César Chávez Day: An Incomplete Honor
César Chávez was born 85 years ago today, March 31, 1927. For many in the Mexican American community, he remains an icon, an almost saintly figure. For some, his legacy is a complicated one.
One of the stories that many say has tarnished Chávez’s legacy is that of Filipino organizers who helped launch the UFW, but who have largely been overlooked by its leadership and historians.
Many credit Larry Itliong and the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee (AWOC) with being the first to successfully organize farmworkers in Delano. Their hard work and sacrifice not only deserves our acknowledgement, but proper recognition by the UFW.
