Born on This Day: Mexican Artist Saturnino Herrán

Before there was Rivera, Siqueiros or Orozco, there was Saturnino Herrán, a painter who many credit with initiating Mexico’s muralist movement.

Herrán was born in Aguascalientes, Aguascalientes on July 9, 1887. He is best known for paintings proudly depicting Mexico’s Indigenous peoples in an honorable light.
