Oaxacan Artist Alejandro Santiago Dies at 49

Oaxacan artist and subject of the 2009 documentary “2501 Migrants: A Journey” died of a massive heart attack early Monday morning in Oaxaca. He was 49 years old.

A Zapotec from Teococuilco in Oaxaca’s Sierra Norte, Santiago was recognized by state authorizes and respected amongst his colleagues for promoting the arts and opening studio spaces for young artists. An artist who began training at the Rufino Tamayo Workshop in Oaxaca City, he would exhibit in San Francisco, Paris and Brussels.

A memorial for Alejandro Santiago will be held in the coming days at La Calera, a downtown Oaxaca City art studio he opened in 2007. May he rest in piece.
