20 Year Anniversary of Colosio Assassination
PRI presidential candidate Luis Donaldo Colosio was assassinated 20 years ago today, March 23, 1994, during a campaign rally in the Lomas Tuarinas neighborhood of Tijuana.
At exactly 5:12 p.m. local time, Colosio was walking through a large crowd of supporters when a man reached out, put a gun to his temple and fired. The shooter was identified as 24 year-old Mario Aburto Martínez. While the official government account at the time claimed Aburto was the sole gunmen, most in the public continue to believe a conspiracy by those in his own party, the PRI, is behind his assassination. Colosio was rushed to a local hospital, but was pronounced dead 2 hours later.
Declassified US government cables reveal a helicopter was sent from San Diego to a the Tijuana General Hospital but was sent back due to safety concerns expressed by the American doctor on board.
Many point to a speech Colosio gave at Mexico City’s Monument to the Revolution 17 days prior to his death in Tijuana as the possible motive for his assassination. In it, he spoke of seeing “a Mexico with hunger and thirst for justice.” Rumors of his imminent demise soon followed, according to reports.
Protesters interrupted a ceremony commemorating the 20 year anniversary of Colosio’s death earlier today in Tijuana. “Salinas’ PRI killed Colosio, the same PRI that governs us,” shouted two young men, reports Zeta of Tijuana.
